Fann Mountains trekking

The day trips show you lakes from a road. The Fann Mountains proper, the grey 5,000-metre walls around Chimtarga, only open up on foot. Here is where people walk, how high it gets and what it asks of you.

The Fann Mountains pack about a hundred peaks into a small knot of western Tajikistan, with Chimtarga at 5,489 metres and a dozen more above 5,000. Between them lie lakes at 2,000 to 3,000 metres, juniper valleys and passes that most fit walkers can cross without ropes.

Most trekking happens between 2,000 and 4,000 metres, from late June to mid-September. You don't need to be a mountaineer. You do need to respect the altitude and the remoteness.

The quick answer

The classic trek starts at Artuch (2,150 m), climbs to the Kulikalon lakes (2,850 m) and crosses the Alauddin Pass (about 3,800 m) to the Alauddin lakes. The season runs late June to mid-September. Altitude sickness is possible above 2,500 metres, so go up gradually. A guide is the sensible choice: rescue is volunteer-run and phone signal is rare. The shortest option on this site is a 2-day tent trek from Samarkand for $320.

Where do people trek in the Fann Mountains?

Around four bases: Artuch for Kulikalon and the Chimtarga loop, the Chapdara valley for Alauddin, Iskanderkul in the south and the Seven Lakes in the west.

  • Artuch (2,150 m): a guesthouse and old mountaineering camp at the end of the road, the start for Kulikalon and most loops.
  • Alauddin: a turquoise lake at about 2,800 metres in the Chapdara valley, reachable in about 4 hours by road from Dushanbe plus a short walk, says Trek Tajikistan.
  • Iskanderkul: the big lake in the south, an end point for treks from Alauddin. See Iskanderkul from Dushanbe.
  • Haft Kul: the Seven Lakes, where trails leave Hazorchashma for the Tavasang Pass. See the Seven Lakes guide.

Bradt describes access via Iskanderkul, or south from the valley road between Panjakent and Ayni. The northern valleys have more villages and homestays.

What are the main passes and altitudes?

Most trekking passes sit between 3,300 and 3,800 metres. The Chimtarga Pass, at about 4,750 metres, is the high one.

What is the Kulikalon trek like?

A steady climb of about 700 metres from Artuch to a plateau of lakes at 2,850 metres, 3 to 4 hours on foot. From there, loops cross the Alauddin Pass.

The path from Artuch is about 9 km, Trek Tajikistan says. Kulikalon, the largest lake on the plateau, sits among smaller ones (Kulisiyoh, Bibijonat, Dushokha) with old junipers on the shore and the Chimtarga massif above. Their 4-day loop crosses the Alauddin Pass at 3,780 metres on day three, a hard climb, then descends about 1,000 metres to Alauddin lake. Total distance: 24 km, rated moderate, with big height gains for the length.

The ground is stony and rarely flat. Trekking poles help on the descents.

What does the 2-day trek from Samarkand involve?

A long first day: Samarkand, the border, about 3 hours by Tajik car to Artuch, then 3 to 4 hours on foot to camp at Kulikalon. Day two crosses the Chukurak Pass and walks down, 5 to 6 hours.

The 2-day Kulikalon trek includes hotel pickup in Samarkand, transport with a Tajik driver after the border, a mountain guide, tents, sleeping bags, dinner, breakfast and a picnic lunch, for groups of up to 10. You drive back to the border and reach Samarkand late on day two. It costs from $320 and cancels free up to 24 hours before.

The operator asks for moderate fitness and some trekking experience, and says it is not suitable for people with back problems or a history of altitude sickness. Bring boots you have walked in, warm night clothes, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. This is a new listing, so the route and inclusions come from the operator's description.

When is the Fann Mountains trekking season?

Late June to mid-September. July and August are the mountaineering months.

Wikipedia gives late June to mid-September for trekking. Trek Tajikistan stretches it to May to September but warns that spring leaves snow on trails and brings much more rain; summer and early autumn are almost dry. After September the days shorten, and the first snow usually returns in late autumn.

Early season, expect snow on the higher passes. For month-by-month detail, see the best time to visit and the 2027 trekking season post.

How fit do you need to be, and what about altitude sickness?

Fit enough to walk uphill for 4 to 6 hours with a daypack. Altitude sickness can start above 2,500 metres, and the Kulikalon camp is at 2,850.

The NHS says symptoms usually begin 6 to 10 hours after arriving at height: headache, nausea, tiredness, dizziness, poor sleep. Its advice is to go up gradually, avoid climbing from below 1,200 to above 3,500 metres in a single day, and above 3,000 metres raise your sleeping height by no more than 500 metres a night. If symptoms get worse or don't ease after a day, go down 300 to 1,000 metres.

Confusion, poor balance or breathlessness at rest are emergencies. On the 2-day trek you sleep at 2,850 metres after starting the day in Samarkand, and reach 3,700 on the pass the next morning. Drink plenty, skip alcohol, and tell the guide early if you feel ill.

Should you trek with a guide or go independently?

With a guide, for most people. Independent trekking is possible with experience, but paths fade, rescue is limited and phones rarely work.

Bradt says independent trekking is possible with the right gear and experience on rough ground, and recommends a local guide because erosion, landslides and shepherds' tracks make the right path hard to find. The UK government is blunter: don't trek alone, use a reputable agency, tell someone your plans, and know that mountain rescue is volunteer-run with limited equipment. Mobile coverage is very limited.

Wild camping is possible almost anywhere, and villages along most routes take guests. Bring cash: there are no ATMs in rural areas. The Tourist Police line is +992 770 55 55 55.

Which longer Fann Mountains treks are worth doing?

The 4-day Kulikalon loop for a first taste, 8 days from Alauddin to the Seven Lakes for a traverse, and the Chimtarga crossing for experienced walkers.

  • Kulikalon loop: 4 days, 24 km, moderate, Artuch to Alauddin over a 3,780 m pass. From €539 with Trek Tajikistan.
  • Alauddin to Haft Kul: 8 days, about 68 km, rated challenging, over the Alauddin, Guitan and Tavasang passes to Hazorchashma, mixing camps and homestays.
  • Chimtarga crossing: 10 days, 82 km, graded extreme, over the 4,750 m Chimtarga Pass and down past Bolshoi Allo. No technical gear needed, but steep and high.
  • Iskanderkul to Alauddin: 9 days, 89 km, rated hard.

Do you want a taste first? The two-day Voru and Seven Lakes tour adds an optional guided hike without a tent.

Not sure you're ready for a week? Start with two days to Kulikalon from Samarkand.

Frequently asked questions

What is the altitude of the Fann Mountains?

The highest peak, Chimtarga, is 5,489 metres. Most trekking happens between 2,000 and 4,000 metres, and the highest walking pass is about 4,750 metres.

Do the Himalayas go through Tajikistan?

No. Tajikistan's mountains are the Pamirs and the Pamir-Alay system, which includes the Fann Mountains. The Himalayas lie further south.

Is Tajikistan 90% mountainous?

More: about 93% of the country is mountains, according to CGIAR.

Do I need a permit to trek in the Fann Mountains?

The Fanns are in Sughd province, not Gorno-Badakhshan, so the GBAO permit doesn't apply. Trek operators list permits as included; ask them what that covers.
