Booking choice: The Kulikalon trek, from $320 per person. Check dates Tour details
The Seven Lakes are a road trip you can do in a day. The Kulikalon lakes, Alauddin and the walls of Chimtarga at 5,489 m are not. You walk in, and the snow on the passes decides when.
This post covers the 2027 season: the window, when to book, which permits you do and do not need, how to reach the trailhead at Artuch, and how not to get sick on the first night.
The quick answer
Plan for late June to mid-September 2027; July and August are the safest bet for the passes. No permit is listed for the Fann Mountains, only a visa if your passport needs one. Artuch is about 5 hours from Dushanbe, or a border crossing plus about 3 hours from Samarkand. The two-day trek from Samarkand sleeps at about 2,850 m on night one, so arrive rested or add a night in the valleys first.
When is the 2027 trekking season in the Fann Mountains?
Late June to mid-September, with July and August best for the high passes and mountaineering.
Wikipedia gives the best trekking period as late June to mid-September and the mountaineering season as July and August. Bradt says June to September. Snow can still turn up in high summer: the Atlas & Boots team lost a day to wind and snow at Chimtarga high camp (4,115 m) on a late July trek.
Our take: June is for the valleys and lower lakes, July and August for the passes, September for clear air and cold nights. The months either side belong to the road trips.
| Month (2027) | High passes | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| May | Before the window | Valleys and the Seven Lakes road |
| Early to mid June | Snow possible on passes | Lower lakes; ask before you commit |
| Late June to mid July | Opening | Season starts; green valleys |
| Mid July to August | Open | Most reliable; busiest |
| Early to mid September | Open, cold nights | Clear air, fewer groups |
| Late September to October | After the window | Day trips, not passes |
When should you book a 2027 Fann Mountains trek?
Fix your dates and visa first, then book the trek once your flights are set. For July and August, that means spring 2027 at the latest.
The two-day Kulikalon trek from Samarkand takes a small group of up to 10, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before and a reserve-now, pay-later option, according to the listing. That makes early booking low-risk. Check whether your 2027 dates already show on the calendar; if they do not, check again after the New Year.
The listing is new and has no guest reviews yet, so read the route and inclusions closely. If you need a Tajik e-visa, apply 2 to 6 weeks before you travel: the UK government advises at least two weeks for processing, and the approval is valid for 60 days. Our entry rules post has the details.
Two days on foot from Artuch: a tent night at Kulikalon and a 3,700 m pass, with tents, sleeping bag and meals included.
Check dates for the Kulikalon trekDo you need a permit to trek in the Fann Mountains?
Not that we can find. The UK government and Trek Tajikistan name permits for the Pamirs (GBAO) and the Afghan border zone, but none for the Fanns in Sughd province.
The FCDO lists a separate travel permit for the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region and one for areas within 20 km of the Afghan border in Khatlon. Trek Tajikistan adds that Lake Sarez and Tajik National Park need extra permits arranged in-country. The Fann Mountains, Artuch and the Seven Lakes are in none of these areas.
You still need the right entry papers for your passport, and a Samarkand start means leaving and re-entering Uzbekistan. Camping can carry a small fee: a forum poster in December 2024 reported 50 somoni per person to pitch a tent at the Artuch alpine camp.
| Area | Permit needed? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Fann Mountains, Artuch, Seven Lakes (Sughd) | None listed | Visa or visa-free entry only |
| Pamirs (GBAO) | Yes | +US$20 in the e-visa form, or in Dushanbe |
| Lake Sarez, Tajik National Park | Extra permit | Arranged in-country |
| Within 20 km of the Afghan border, Khatlon | Yes | Consular Department, Dushanbe |

How do you get to Artuch?
From Samarkand: about 1.5 to 2 hours to the border, then about 3 hours with a Tajik driver. From Dushanbe: about 5 hours by road.
The Kulikalon trek listing gives the Samarkand timings above, with hotel pickup and the border handled on the way. Trek Tajikistan puts Dushanbe to Artuch at about 5 hours. The Artuch guesthouse sits at 2,150 m.
On your own, it is cheap but slow. A poster on the Eurasia.travel forum in December 2024 described a shared taxi from the Jartepa border to Panjakent, then an 8:00 minibus to Artuch from near the Panjakent market for 20 somoni. The last 4 km to the alpine camp are steep and rocky, and many people walk them. Prices and schedules from a forum are a starting point, not a timetable.

Hotel pickup in Samarkand, the border, the drive to Artuch and a mountain guide, then two days on foot. Small group, up to 10.

Day one is a 3 to 4-hour walk up to the Kulikalon lakes and a night in a tent. Day two crosses the Chukurak Pass and drops back to Artuch in 5 to 6 hours.
The listing lays it out plainly. Day one: pickup in Samarkand, the border, the drive to Artuch, then about 3 to 4 hours up to Kulikalon, where you camp below the north face of Chimtarga. Day two: breakfast by the lake, the climb to Chukurak Pass (3,700 m per the listing), down past Chukurak Lake to Artuch, and the drive back to Samarkand by late evening.
Tents, a sleeping bag, breakfast, dinner and a picnic lunch are included. The listing asks for moderate fitness and some trekking experience, and rules out people with back problems or a history of altitude sickness. It is a long weekend's worth of mountain in two days. For a slower trip, Trek Tajikistan runs a 4-day, 24 km loop over the Alauddin Pass; our trekking guide compares the options.

How do you acclimatise for a Fann Mountains trek?
Do not go from low altitude to a sleeping altitude of 2,750 m or more in one day if you can avoid it. Add a night in the valleys first, or pick a longer trek.
The US CDC's Yellow Book advises against going from low altitude to a sleeping altitude of 2,750 m or higher in a single day, and above 3,000 m it recommends raising your sleeping altitude by no more than 500 m a night. The two-day trek starts in Samarkand at about 700 m and sleeps at Kulikalon the same night, about 2,850 m by Trek Tajikistan's figure for the plateau, so it sits on the wrong side of that line.
You can tilt the odds: sleep a night or two in Panjakent (about 1,000 m) or at Artuch before you start, drink plenty, go slow on day one, and skip alcohol in camp. If symptoms get worse instead of better, go down. The FCDO notes that mountain rescue in Tajikistan is limited, so do not trek alone.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to trek in the Fann Mountains?
July and August for the high passes. Late June and early September work too, with more snow risk early and colder nights late.
Do you need a guide in the Fann Mountains?
No law requires one that we found, but the UK government advises against trekking alone because rescue is limited. A guide also handles transport and the border from Samarkand.
Can you trek the Fann Mountains from Samarkand?
Yes. The two-day Kulikalon trek starts with hotel pickup in Samarkand, crosses the border and drives about 3 hours to Artuch.
Do you need a permit for the Fann Mountains?
None is listed by the FCDO or Trek Tajikistan. The permits they name are for the Pamirs (GBAO), Lake Sarez and the Afghan border zone.
