Booking choice: The Seven Lakes day trip, from $63 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most people see the Seven Lakes between May and October, when the water is at its bluest and the Shing valley road is dry. Winter is a different trip. The road climbs from Panjakent at about 1,000 m to Marguzor at 2,139 m, and above that the track to the seventh lake is narrow, steep and at the mercy of the weather.
This post sets out what we could confirm for winter 2026-27, and where the honest answer is: ask the operator the week before.
The quick answer
Yes, you can visit the Seven Lakes in winter, but plan for the sixth lake, not the seventh. Travellers report snow and ice on the valley road and recommend a 4x4. Daylight in Panjakent is about 9.5 hours in late December, and Samarkand averages about 7 to 10 °C by day and around freezing at night from December to February, colder at the lakes. Check each tour's date picker: no listing publishes a winter timetable.
Can you visit the Seven Lakes in winter?
Yes, with limits. Reports from recent winters say cars reach the sixth lake, Marguzor, while the seventh, Hazorchashma, is often out of reach.
The lakes sit one above the other along the Shing river, from Mijgon at 1,598 m to Hazorchashma at 2,400 m (Wikipedia). On the Eurasia.travel forum, a local member answering a winter question in January 2025 said the trip is possible "only up to the sixth lake", in a 4x4, because the road can be snowy or icy.
Even in May the last stretch is weather dependent. Eternal Arrival describes a one-lane road above the sixth lake that drivers skip after rain, then a short walk from the car park. In winter we would treat Hazorchashma as a bonus. A forum poster in March 2026 found it frozen.
| Point on the road | Altitude | Winter outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Panjakent | about 1,000 m | Town roads open; frost on clear nights |
| Mijgon (lake 1) | 1,598 m | Reachable when the valley road is open |
| Nofin (lake 4) | 1,820 m | Reachable when the valley road is open |
| Marguzor (lake 6) | 2,139 m | Usual winter turnaround, per traveller reports |
| Hazorchashma (lake 7) | 2,400 m | Narrow track, often skipped or frozen |
Which Seven Lakes and Iskanderkul tours run in winter 2026-27?
None of the listings states a winter season or a winter timetable. The date picker on each tour is the only reliable answer.
Guest reviews show trips running into November and again from March. On the picnic day trip, guests wrote up trips on 5 and 27 November 2025. On the Iskanderkul day tour from Dushanbe, reviews are dated 13 November 2025 and 25 March 2026. Winter dates are quiet, and we could not confirm which operators run in December, January and February.
If a date shows as available, book it, then message the operator a few days before and ask which lakes they expect to reach. Every trip here has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you lose nothing if the forecast turns. For the overnight option, the two-day Voru tour gives the lakes a full morning, which matters when the sun sets before 17:15.
The flagship day trip from Samarkand: border help, the Panjakent bazaar and lunch by Marguzor.
Check dates for the Seven Lakes day tripWhat is the Shing valley road like in winter?
A narrow, partly unpaved mountain road with tight bends. Snow, ice and rockfall are the winter risks, and a 4x4 is the sensible vehicle.
The road leaves the Zeravshan valley near Panjakent and follows the Shing river up past the villages of Padrut and Marguzor. Russian-language reviews of a Samarkand tour on Sputnik8 describe it as a dirt serpentine, and some mention tours changed the day before because the road had washed out, or a driver turning back at a rockslide.
The UK government's Tajikistan travel advice warns that heavy rain or snow can block roads in autumn and winter, that avalanches, landslides and rockfall are a high risk in the mountains, and that some rural areas need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. It also tells you to take local advice on road conditions after bad weather. Your driver has that advice. Trust a turnaround.

Can you reach Iskanderkul over the Anzob road in winter?
Usually, through the Anzob Tunnel, but heavy snow has closed the Dushanbe to Khujand road before. Allow more than the listed 3 hours each way.
From Dushanbe the road crosses the Gissar range through the Anzob Tunnel, about 5 km long at roughly 2,700 m. Before it opened, the route over the range was impassable for much of the year (Wikipedia). The tunnel changed that, but it did not end winter closures: RFE/RL reported the Dushanbe to Khujand road shut by snow, fog and wind in the Ayni district in February 2009.
We could not find a current source on how often the road closes now, or on winter access along the side road to the lake. The listing for the Iskanderkul day tour gives about 130 km and 3 hours each way. In January, budget for more, and do not count on the walk to the waterfall if the path is icy. The water is cold all year, so swimming is out of the question anyway.

From Dushanbe: hotel lobby pickup, a small group of up to 10 and food and drinks included, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Samarkand averages about 7 to 10 °C by day and around freezing at night from December to February. The lakes are 600 to 1,400 m higher, so expect colder air and frozen edges.
The temperatures below are 1991-2020 averages for Samarkand from Wikipedia's climate table (source: Pogoda.ru.net), the start point of most day trips. We found no published climate data for the lakes themselves. Sunrise and sunset are calculated for Panjakent in local time (UTC+5). The steep valley walls hide the sun earlier than these times on the lake shore.
The day trips leave Samarkand at 7:00 and get back around 19:00. From late November to January that means a dark start and a dark return.
| Date | Sunrise / sunset, Panjakent | Daylight | Samarkand average max / min (month) |

| 15 Nov 2026 | 07:13 / 17:16 | 10 h | 14.4 / 3.2 °C |
| 21 Dec 2026 | 07:46 / 17:09 | 9 h 25 min | 9.1 / -0.2 °C |
| 15 Jan 2027 | 07:48 / 17:28 | 9 h 40 min | 7.3 / -1.3 °C |
| 15 Feb 2027 | 07:23 / 18:05 | 10 h 40 min | 9.5 / -0.2 °C |

What should you pack for a winter Seven Lakes trip?
Warm layers, shoes with grip, gloves, a hat and your passport. The lakes are a day of short stops in cold air, not a hike.
- Passport, with any Tajik e-visa printed. You cross two border posts each way. Our post on the 2026 entry rules covers who needs what.
- A down or synthetic jacket over a fleece. Minibuses are warm; lakeshores are not.
- Boots with a proper sole. Viewpoints and car parks can be icy. Light trail shoes are fine in summer, not now.
- Gloves, a warm hat and sunglasses. Snow glare at 2,000 m is real.
- Somoni in cash for snacks and tea. The listings say personal expenses are yours, and Tajikistan runs mostly on cash.
- A power bank. Phone batteries drain fast in the cold.
Skip the swimsuit. More on the seasons in our guide to the best time to visit.

Frequently asked questions
Are the Seven Lakes frozen in winter?
We found no reliable source on how much of each lake freezes. A traveller found the seventh and highest lake, Hazorchashma, frozen in March 2026, and the higher lakes are the coldest.
Can you swim at the Seven Lakes in winter?
No. Swimming is a summer option on some listings. In winter the water is near freezing and the shore can be icy.
Is the Anzob Tunnel open in winter?
It is the year-round route between Dushanbe and the north, but heavy snow has closed the road before. Ask your operator the day before an Iskanderkul trip.
What is the best winter month for the Seven Lakes?
November or March, when days are longer and the road is more often clear. Mid March can bring rain and mud, according to local forum members.
