Booking choice: The Seven Lakes day trip, from $63 per person. Check dates Tour details
Tajikistan has opened up fast. Since 2022, citizens of more than 50 countries can stay 30 days without a visa, and in 2024 another batch joined. The UK is still not on the list, and neither are India or China.
Rules change without much notice, so we checked the official and primary sources on 28 October 2026. Check them again before you travel.
The quick answer
Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and most of the EU can enter Tajikistan without a visa for up to 30 days. UK, Indian and Chinese passport holders need a visa; the e-visa from evisa.tj is the easy route, and the UK government says to allow at least two weeks. Day-trippers do not need to register. To get back into Uzbekistan, you either need visa-free status there or a double or multiple-entry Uzbek visa.
Which countries can enter Tajikistan visa-free in 2026-27?
Citizens of the 52 countries on the 2022 list (minus Turkey) and the 24 countries plus Palestinian official passports added on 1 May 2024, for up to 30 days. CIS neighbours have their own rules.
The 30-day waiver started on 1 January 2022 for 52 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Norway and most EU states (Fergana). On 1 May 2024 a second group followed, under a government decision of 28 March 2024 (buch-dein-visum.de).
That second list completed the EU: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Malta, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia joined, along with Brazil, Mexico, Serbia, Mongolia and others. Wikipedia's visa policy page records that Turkey's waiver for ordinary passports was cancelled on 20 April 2024, and that Iran (2024) and Dominica (2025) were added later. Several GetYourGuide listings for Samarkand day trips still name the UK, India, Turkey, China, Hong Kong, Israel, Vietnam, Pakistan and Nigeria as not visa-free.

Do UK citizens need a visa for Tajikistan?
Yes. The UK government's travel advice, last updated on 19 October 2026, says you must have a visa, and the e-visa is the usual way to get one.
The FCDO entry requirements page says to apply for an e-visa from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travel and to "allow at least two weeks for processing". The e-visa is valid for 60 days after approval, so do not apply too early. Tourist visas cannot be extended.
Your passport needs at least 6 months left from the day you arrive and 2 blank pages. Some applicants are asked for a hotel booking or a letter of invitation. On the Seven Lakes mountain adventure, the invitation letter and the Tajik visa fee are listed as included, which saves one step.
The invitation letter and Tajik visa fee are listed as included on this one, with hotel pickup in Samarkand.

Apply online at evisa.tj, pay by card and print the approval. A single-entry e-visa costs US$30 and covers up to 60 days within a 90-day window.
The official portal is evisa.tj, which has run since 2016 and works at land borders as well as airports. Trek Tajikistan puts the single-entry fee at US$30, non-refundable, and says it is usually issued within several days. Wikipedia lists a multiple-entry version at US$50. Ignore lookalike agency sites that charge more for the same form.
The e-visa form also sells the GBAO permit for the Pamirs, for an extra US$20. You do not need it for the Fann Mountains or the Seven Lakes, which are in Sughd province. Our visa and safety guide goes through the rest.
| Item | Cost (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-entry e-visa | US$30 | Up to 60 days within 90; non-refundable |
| Multiple-entry e-visa | US$50 | Per Wikipedia; same stay limit |
| GBAO permit (Pamirs) | +US$20 | Added in the e-visa form; not needed for the Fanns |
| Visa-free entry | Free | Up to 30 days |

Do you need to register with OVIR in Tajikistan?
Not on a day trip. The FCDO says visitors who enter without an e-visa and stay longer than 10 days must register, and hotels can no longer do it for you.
Registration is with the Office for Registration of Foreign Citizens, still widely called OVIR. The FCDO gives the Dushanbe office at 5 Mirzo Tursunzoda Street and says you must register again if you later move to a different address. Trek Tajikistan's guide gives a different threshold in two places, so follow the official one.
Who this affects: visa-free trekkers who come for a longer trip, such as a week in the Fanns plus time in Dushanbe. An e-visa holder does not need to register, according to Trek Tajikistan. A Samarkand day trip or the two-day trek never gets close to 10 days.
Can you get back into Uzbekistan after a Samarkand day trip?
Yes, if you are visa-free in Uzbekistan or hold a double or multiple-entry Uzbek visa. A single-entry Uzbek visa is used up when you leave for Tajikistan.
Uzbekistan now waives visas for most Western visitors. The FCDO gives British citizens up to 30 days for tourism. US citizens have had 30 days visa-free since 1 January 2026 (Times of Central Asia), and in October 2025 China, Egypt, Jordan and four Gulf states were added at 30 days (Fergana).
The FCDO sets no special rule for leaving and coming back, but border guards check your exit stamps against the 30-day limit, so count your days from your first arrival to be safe. If you need an Uzbek visa, the adventure listing is clear: you need a double or multiple-entry one. Uzbekistan also requires registration within 3 days, which hotels handle; keep the same hotel booked for the night you return.

Leaves the Gur-e-Amir steps at 7:00, with organiser staff helping at the border on both sides. Back in Samarkand around 19:00.
Explore the Seven Lakes day trip Tour detailsWhat do you need at the border on the day?
Your passport, any visa printouts and some cash. The guide handles the rest, and the crossing can take minutes or an hour.
The crossing on the road to Panjakent is Jartepa. Forum posters describe walking through the Uzbek post, then the Tajik one, and carrying on in a Tajik vehicle; the Kulikalon trek listing also switches to a Tajik driver at the border. One guest on the picnic day trip described the crossing as about five minutes; a poster on the Eurasia.travel forum waited about an hour each way.
Bring the passport you used to apply for any visa, and somoni for personal spending, which the listings say is your own cost. Drones are banned on several of the listings. Winter adds one more variable to the day; see our winter post before you book a December date.

How long does the Tajikistan e-visa take?
Trek Tajikistan says it is usually issued within several days. The UK government advises allowing at least two weeks.
