Seven Lakes day trip from Samarkand

A minibus leaves Gur-e-Amir at 7 AM, crosses into Tajikistan and climbs the Shing valley lake by lake, with lunch by Marguzor and a last stop above Hazorchashma. Pick it for the plain, well-run version of the day: a fixed meeting point, help at both border posts, and a guide who speaks English.

Seven Lakes Day Trip from Samarkand with Lunch

About this experience

This is the trip most people mean when they say they did the Seven Lakes from Samarkand. You meet on the front steps of the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum (outside, not in the courtyard), and the bus leaves at 7:00 AM. The listing is blunt about it: latecomers are not waited for. Staff help you through the Uzbek exit post and the Tajik entry post, then the day runs through the Panjakent morning bazaar and up the Shing River to the lakes.

Haft Kul is a road, not a hike. The lakes sit one above the other in a single valley, from Mijgon at about 1,600 m to Hazorchashma at about 2,400 m, and the bus stops at each one. The listing puts lunch at Lake Marguzor, the largest of the seven, with a vegetarian option on request, and includes a stop in a mountain village for warm bread from the tandoor. The day ends at a viewpoint above Hazorchashma, with a chance to walk down to the last lake, and you're back at Gur-e-Amir around 7:00 PM.

Two caveats. The visa and the Letter of Invitation are listed as not included, and the listing names the UK, India, Turkey, China, Hong Kong, Israel, Vietnam, Pakistan and Nigeria as passports that need a Tajik visa. If you hold one of those, sort it out on the official e-visa site well before the day. And this is a long day in a vehicle on a mountain road: the listing rules out anyone prone to motion sickness. If you'd rather be collected from your hotel, see the Seven Beauties premium tour or the mountain adventure.

Tips before you book

  • Check your passport against the visa list on the listing, and against UK government entry advice if you're British. The UK e-visa takes at least two weeks.
  • If you need a visa for Uzbekistan, it must be double or multiple entry: you leave and come back the same day.
  • Bring local cash. The listing says personal expenses are yours, and the Tajik side runs mainly on cash.
  • Pack a swimsuit and a towel if you plan to swim. A layer too: Hazorchashma sits at about 2,400 m.
  • Pickup options appear at checkout. Pick one there if the walk to Gur-e-Amir is long from your hotel.
